Consideration for vulnerable road users
Being cautious - but not being over cautious
Keeping space around your car.
You will be given advice features of town driving such as
Multi-lane junctions
Unusual roundabouts
Bus and cycle lanes
Under and over passes.
This will be a theory session, with practice in other modules if the opportunity allows.
The aim of this module is to cover safe driving in: -
Rain
Sleet and snow
Mist and fog
Bright sunlight
The session will look at how to: -
Make sure you can see and be seen
Decide what speed to drive at
Apply the rules in practice
The module also covers skidding
The causes and how to avoid them
Correcting slow speed skids
Braking on poor surfaces
This will be a practical session. During which you will be able to discuss features of driving on all types of road such as: -
The main differences from town driving
Observing the road ahead
Making progress safely
Bends, hills and uneven roads
Keeping a safe distance from vehicles ahead
Safe overtaking
With special emphasis on: -
Consideration for pedestrians
Horse riders
Sharp bends
Use of the horn
Farm entrances and buildings
Slow moving vehicles
Animals and mud on road
This will be a practical driving session, will take place after lighting up time, and will cover.
The importance of headlights
Adjusting to the dusk
Driving at dusk and dawn
Judging speed and distance
The correct use of lights
Dazzle
Looking for pedestrians
Being prepared for cyclists etc
This will be a practical session on 2 or 3 lane dual carriageways. Topics covered will include.
Effective observation (use of mirrors, Blindspots, scanning the near ,middle and far distances)
Judgment and planning (safe distances and the 2 second rule, overtaking)
Overtaking and lane discipline.
This should be a practical session on a motorway where possible, covering and extending the skills highlighted in Module 5. Topics covered will include.
Joining and leaving motorways
Planning journeys in advance
Safe speeds in different circumstances
Effective observation and anticipation
Signs, signals and markings
Lane discipline
Courtesy to other road users
Motorway Fatigue
